College Avenue Campus Vision Plan

The long-range vision for the College Avenue Campus, as illustrated here, calls for the creation of two major walking corridors, which intersect in a high pedestrian activity area by the Rutgers Student Center and Brower Commons. College Avenue forms an existing corridor that will be extensively improved and landscaped. A new corridor, called the “Raritan Mall,” will be built across College Avenue, connecting the campus and adjoining Sixth Ward neighborhood to new facilities at the Raritan River waterfront.

It will take many years and significant private and public funding to fully realize the College Avenue vision, which proposes new academic and administrative buildings, student housing, and recreation space. However, Rutgers has committed $17 million for the first phase of this multiyear project. Expected to begin in 2008, this initial phase will provide a greener and more pedestrian-friendly environment by creating welcoming and appealing public spaces on the College Avenue Campus.
