College Avenue Plaza—Scarlet Carpet

The long-range plan envisions the construction of a major new pedestrian spine called the Raritan Mall, which would connect the campus and surrounding neighborhood to the Raritan River waterfront. The broad esplanade to the river will be represented by a “scarlet carpet” with integrated water features that are intended to symbolically connect the campus with the river. The reorientation of the campus to the river will ultimately shift the ways in which the campus is used and will cultivate a new kind of environment for social and academic exchange. The first portion of the Raritan Mall, a corridor extending across College Avenue from the Rutgers Student Center to the Brower Commons courtyard, will be built as part of this phase of work.
