In early 2005, Rutgers unveiled “A New Vision for the College Avenue Campus” in partnership with the City of New Brunswick. This long-term project is designed to strengthen Rutgers’ ties with its host communities and create a state university that is a major source of pride for New Jersey.

This project seeks to improve Rutgers’ most historic campus so that it provides a draw to top students and faculty and encourages informal interactions among members of the university and neighboring communities.

Through a design competition, Rutgers asked some of the world’s best-known architects, landscape architects, and planners to present thought-provoking concepts for the university’s consideration. In December 2006, President Richard L. McCormick selected Enrique Norten of TEN Arquitectos and Ignacio Bunster-Ossa of Wallace Roberts & Todd, LLC, to lead the team that is partnering with Rutgers in moving this initiative forward.

Rutgers has committed $17 million for the first phase of this multiyear project. Begun in 2008, this initial phase will provide a greener and more pedestrian-friendly environment by creating welcoming and appealing public spaces on the College Avenue Campus.
