Milestones for the College Avenue Campus Initiatives

April 21, 2008 Rutgers Facilities and Capital Planning Department and TEN Arquitectos present final plans for phase one of the College Avenue Campus redesign, which will transform outdoor spaces on a section of College Avenue between Huntington Street and Bishop Place. Representatives from Wallace Roberts & Todd and Parsons Brinckerhoff also help answer questions. October 15, 2007 The design team TEN Arquitectos and Wallace Roberts & Todd presents preliminary plans for phase one of the College Avenue Campus redesign at a public information session. The initial phase of the project will provide a greener and more pedestrian-friendly environment through the creation of appealing public spaces. December 13, 2006 President McCormick announces the winning team of the College Avenue Campus Design Competition.

November 2006

Public forum on proposed design concepts.
October 2006 Lecture series on campus design and finalist public presentations. A jury of representatives from the Rutgers community and architecture, landscape design, and urban planning professionals evaluates the five proposals.

September 26, 2006 Conceptual design proposals exhibition opens to the public at the Zimmerli Art Museum.

June 2006 College Avenue Campus initiative receives $1 million grant from the Bank of America.

March 22, 2006 Conceptual design proposals submitted.

January 2006 “Immersion Days” program introduces the five finalists to the Rutgers community.

December 8, 2005 The five finalists selected to prepare conceptual designs for the College Avenue Campus announced.

November 2005 Responses evaluated and 10 firms interviewed based on their demonstrated design excellence and experience with comparable projects, as well as the composition and overall quality of the teams, their approach to and understanding of the project, and the quality and availability of the principals and staff proposed to perform the services.

Request for Qualifications (RFQ) responses due to the university’s department of facilities.

September 2005 University launches design competition through a competitive process to enlist a preeminent design team to develop an innovative concept for the College Avenue Campus that fits within the framework of the university’s physical master plan. RFQ issued to 45 architectural firms across the nation and around the globe.

June 2005 Campus advisory committee begins five-week summer seminar to present information and gather input from invited members of the university community.

May 2005 Campus advisory committee created to facilitate ongoing discussions among students, faculty, and staff.

April 2005 Presentations to university bodies, student leaders, and alumni associations. Two public information sessions conducted jointly with the City of New Brunswick.

March 2005 Alumni advisory committee formed.

February 2005 Rutgers President Richard L. McCormick announces “A New Vision for the College Avenue Campus” in partnership with the City of New Brunswick. At the core of this multiyear project is the conversion of College Avenue, a city-owned street, into a more welcoming, pedestrian-friendly public space.
